The Year In Review — December 2024
All the New Outlook topics, stories, and magazine issues you missed this past year.
In this final entry of The Monthly Review for the year, we reflect on the top ten topics, stories, and magazine issues covered by New Outlook. The past eight months of this publication have been an incredible journey, far exceeding my expectations for its reach and impact. To everyone who has supported this independent journalistic endeavor, you are the true heroes—champions of the effort to challenge and subvert corporate media narratives and propaganda as we move into 2025 and beyond. We’re just getting started.
➊ WHISTLEBLOWERS: HEROES OR TRAITORS?
There are two types of people in the world:
One who fundamentally believes that US intelligence agencies should not be able to clandestinely spy on or actively work to censor its citizens, and that journalists or whistleblowers who expose these acts are actually heroic for having done so, on behalf of the public.
One who fundamentally believes that journalists or whistleblowers who readily work to expose clandestine operations of US intelligence agencies (spying, censoring, entrapment, etc), are criminals and traitors to their country and should be punished as such.

Why You Should Care About Trump’s War on Whistleblowers
2019
Five years ago, The Intercept produced a harrowing short documentary on how President Trump, in his first term as president, expanded the playbook perfected by President Obama on how to attack, indict, and destroy the lives of journalistic sources. “This is about criminalizing journalism,” the video description reads. “It is about increasing the secrecy and decreasing the transparency. It is an assault on the very idea of a democratic society.”
Corporate news media is collapsing, while a new wave of independent media has been steadily rising since the late 2000s. This issue of Outlook magazine shines a spotlight on the trailblazing independent journalists who are redefining the rules of modern media. These pioneers are leading the charge toward a new era of integrity, truth-telling, and nonpartisanship in journalism—a vital revival of the industry’s foundational ideals. ➋ THE MILITANCY OF VICTIMHOOD
The events at Evergreen State College in 2017 remain an under-examined turning point in the evolution of modern Woke movements. Bret Weinstein, a well-regarded professor at the college, was ultimately forced out after refusing to comply with newly instated equity guidelines. These policies, enforced by a group of student activists, demanded that faculty and administrators who were not “people of color” publicly denounce their supposed inherent “white privilege” and “racism.” Amid the turmoil, Bret warned that this authoritarian-like mindset would inevitably spread into every facet of society. His prediction has proven to be disturbingly accurate.
It’s worth noting that many of the tactics employed by Evergreen State College’s equity council and student activists bear a striking resemblance to those used under Mao Zedong’s Communist regime, where routine self-criticism was mandatory to demonstrate loyalty to the doctrine, with failure to comply often resulting in persecution. Xi Van Fleet, a survivor of Mao’s Cultural Revolution, has drawn parallels between these movements and a revival of communist ideologies in America, with Woke activists taking on the role of Mao’s Red Guards. She even explored these connections in her book.

➌ ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS & A DEMORALIZED CITIZENRY
If you believe Americans have not been fully demoralized to a point of no return, you’re sadly mistaken and clearly have not been paying enough attention.
In July, there were people online actually sharing that they were deeply saddened that a political candidate was not assassinated in cold blood, in broad daylight. Seriously pause, take a beat, and let that sink in for a bit, no matter your political affiliation.
Being so invested in partisan politics that you want an oppositional candidate to be killed for opposing your political party is as low as it gets. But what else did we expect from people who are so damn propagandized that they would literally kill for their party and also would want a candidate to be killed for opposing their party.
What is remarkable is that the same people who are expressing their discontent that a political candidate was not killed, are the same types of people who are likely to have virtue signaling signs in front of their houses that read “In this house, we believe black lives matter, love is love, and kindness is everything.” The irony.

➍ AN UNDETECTABLE COUP
The calculated manipulation of language by the Left is at the root of today’s sociopolitical chaos. To get to the heart of the issue, we must look to the “Long March through the Institutions.”
In short, the “Long March through the Institutions” defined the incremental intellectual takeover of a society. “The strategy focuses on slowly winning over the chief institutions that determine the direction of a culture and thereby creating a soft revolution from within those institutions,” summarizes Renew’s Bobby Harrington.

Educational Series: The Long March Through the Institutions
In Part 2 of a three-part video series by Christopher Rufo on America’s Cultural Revolution, entitled the “Long March Through the Institutions,” Rufo provides a rare insight into understanding the modern Left: how they dominate the institutions, how they shape the narrative, and how they influence what you think about the world around you.
➎ RACE AS A BOOMING INDUSTRY
Think of race as an industry. For institutions, organizations, and individuals whose entire ethos is built upon racial advocacy, they must be willing to do whatever it takes to keep the industry going, even if it means keeping people wrongfully obsessed with their identity rather than their intrinsic values. These institutions must be willing to advance narratives that may not be for the betterment or wellness of their support base, but that serve the interest of the “movement,” as a whole; legitimizing the idea that racism is more pernicious today than it ever was.
The following 3-step strategy always applies:
Create the problem (Say anything and everything is the result of racism)
Create the solution (Advance organizational “solutions” including forced DEI Trainings, discriminatory hiring criteria, quotas, etc)
Create lifetime customers (Cultivate new generations of people who embody victimhood and are primed to search for AND manufacture racially based events—see Jussie Smolett etc.)
➏ BEHOLD: THE LEFT
If you haven’t seen this video from Peter Boghossian, I highly recommend it.
The video is one of the best illustrations of the Left’s inability to be accountable, to debate, to act in good faith, to openly discuss their ideas at length and welcome oppositional feedback.
It’s a great illustration of how the Left is tactical, deceitful, elite at moving goalposts, mob-like, manipulative to get their way, ideological to the bone, and of the belief that only their worldview matters.
This video is the perfect illustration of how the Left has figured out how to mask their hunger for a totalizing power by feigning “compassion” for others. They seek control; of language, of spaces, of narratives, and of people. They are intolerant, and tyrannical by default. As soon as you stand in opposition to their ideology, you become Enemy #1. Off to the gulags!

➐ IN THE NAME OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

Communists have one playbook and it is to cast out whatever or whoever does not bend to their ideology. It’s about total power. They seek to ease the transition from the current dominant culture to their preferred culture.
Their philosophy can be summarized as such: “The dissidents are the reason we can’t have the communist utopia we seek. If we can cast all the dissidents out and replace them with the correct people who are committed to our goals, we can quickly bring about a more utopian, communist world.”
Historically, dissidents or those who posed a challenge to the ideology were shot and killed, or sent off to the gulag to labor endlessly. Today, it’s cancelation, it’s deplatforming you so you can’t exist anywhere online or receive payments for your work, it’s calling you names that you can’t recover from. It’s making your life a living hell because you do not conform to their nonsensical worldviews.
➑ THE PROBLEM WITH JON STEWART
In 2004, Jon Stewart went on CNN’s Crossfire show, cohosted by Tucker Carlson, to give Carlson & his cohost a talking to about journalistic ethics & the responsibilities of the news media. He was right!
Ironically, in 2024, Stewart is the commentator who now displays the very same unethical standards in newsmen that he once lambasted. He has blatantly become more partisan and ideological, while Carlson, in the wake of his departure from FOX News, has become more anti-establishment and representative of the adversarial flank of independent news media.
Carlson seems to have taken Stewart’s advice in 2004. However, twenty years later, it seems Stewart has become the thing he hated most back then: a propagandist. You can’t make this stuff up.
➒ THE WNBA, CAITLIN CLARK, & STRUGGLE SESSIONS
In Maoist China, Struggle Sessions, or the public condemnation of someone, were violent public spectacles where people who were considered to be the opposition or enemies were publicly accused, humiliated, beaten and tortured, sometimes to death, often by people with whom they were close. In today’s society, Maoist Struggle Sessions—which occurred during Mao’s Cultural Revolution (1966)—have evolved into what we know as Cancel Culture, also simultaneously happening during America’s own Cultural Revolution.
Throughout her first professional season as a WNBA player, Indiana Fever guard and sports icon Caitlin Clark faced extreme vitriol from current WNBA players, coaches, league veterans, and the sports media. Clark was constantly smeared for being responsible for the droves of “toxic fanbase” she’d attracted to the league. She was often insulted for being white, for being privileged, for being MAGA adjacent because she grew up in an Iowan town, and for not doing enough to stop all basketball fans online from speaking ill about WNBA players. For the record, Caitlin is 22-years old…
The WNBA—the league that has branded itself the “social justice” league comprised of activists and women advocacy groups—its media, and its Woke fans have seemingly declared an all out Struggle Session campaign against Caitlin Clark for being great at her sport, for quickly rising to become the face of the league, and for galvanizing an unprecedented amount of interest in women’s basketball in just a matter of five months.
It doesn’t seem like there is an end in sight to this Struggle Session, at least not until they’ve managed to break the young rookie’s spirit (a thing many, including myself, argue has already happened). And I strongly believe it is because Caitlin Clark, on a very fundamental level, represents everything that these WNBA players are ideologically opposed to. Here are seven reasons I believe Clark is currently facing a Struggle Session:
She is a white girl to whom race is not a major factor (because she actually seems to value notable qualities in people other than their skin color—imagine that). White players who are widely accepted in the league almost always seem to have, at one point, denigrated and denounced themselves for the sin of being white and for the acceptance by the black players.
She is a white girl who does not care to broadcast her politics publicly, as many “allies” and activists in the league are wont to do as a virtue signal tactic for validation.
She is a white girl who hails from a rural Iowa town, which many have disingenuously framed as the endorsement of white supremacy. (God forbid you were raised in a town where everyone wasn’t a bleeding Democrat.)
She is straight. And well, the league is known to be an LGBTQ-centric league. (No explanation needed there.)
Her success is a testament to a society that prioritizes meritocracy as opposed to a society guided by the principles of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (aka getting special treatment based on your identity—something the WNBA widely and openly champions).
Her early fame and fortune has brought along millions of new viewership and fandom to the league which has disrupted and burst the bubble of the homogeneity of thought, the “safe space,” and the perpetual victimhood that the WNBA has long thrived off of.
Her greatness on the court, the fanfare she’s attracted, the accomplishments she’s made in her rookie year alone, and her early rise to becoming the face of the league represents a direct threat to the racially-based activist movements and narratives that have long defined the WNBA, and have been spearheaded by black women in the league and sports media.
To many, this issue is a women’s basketball issue. To those in the know, this is more than a sports issue. It’s yet another cultural landmark moment in America’s ongoing Cultural Revolution. If you’re not paying attention and learning from it, you should be. These events will soon be everywhere all at once. Knowing how to digest what you’re seeing and responding accordingly will be crucial.
Rule #1 of Struggle Sessions: Never bow to the Woke mob.
➓ A CANCEROUS CULTURAL REVOLUTION
The Cultural Revolution will make you believe that identity and lived experience take precedence over all other values you possess as a human being.
The Cultural Revolution will make you believe that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is a progressive initiative striving for acceptance of people from all walks of life and belief system. In reality, it is an initiative meant to discriminate based on race, promote hiring quotas, embrace likeminded ideologues, exclude diversity of thought, reward people who fit in a protected class of people, and punish people who exist outside of that protected class of people.
The Cultural Revolution will make you believe that activists are agitating for a just world, not to turn the tables so that they can wield power.
The Cultural Revolution will make you believe that holding elections for presidential office is a whole extra step that is not necessary. The “Dictatorship of the Proletariat” or the elites and experts whom the electorate have entrusted with their unwavering support can simply determine who the president will be for the country. (See Kamala)
The Cultural Revolution will present itself as a benevolent movement for the good of mankind, while it actively erodes the very fundamentals of civilization. From the eradication of religion to the upheaval of traditions and cultural elements that have kept society together for centuries.
The Cultural Revolution will make you believe that “all white people are inherently racist” and that “black people fundamentally cannot be racist.”
The Cultural Revolution will make you believe that you are exempt from all accountability because all -isms and power dynamics are to blame for your shortcomings.
The Cultural Revolution will make you embrace victimhood, and even weaponize it to your benefit.
The Cultural Revolution will stratify society into the “good people” versus the “bad people” via politics, religion, and propaganda.
The Cultural Revolution will advance anything and everything that ultimately disrupts the normal, standard, and traditional.
The Cultural Revolution will make you buy into the notion that men can be women, women can be men, and children can identify as something other than what they are, and to that end, undergo sex change.
The Cultural Revolution will make you believe that it is not taking place at this very moment, even as the evidence shows that it’s been slowly at work since the late 60’s, taking root within America’s own educational institutions, and proliferating outward into society.
The Cultural Revolution is here. Its roots deeply planted; bearing fruits at an alarming rate. Societal decay is around the corner if all of these ideas are not immediately challenged.
That’s a wrap for 2025! Happy New Year! And I hope you enjoyed this installment of The Monthly Review. Thank you for reading, subscribing, and supporting independent journalism.
The Intercept is in scream fundraising mode. They need to raise at least $625,000 by end of day or "That’s not just a problem for journalists’ careers. It’s an existential crisis for democracy, a system of government that depends on a strong, free press." They also blame it on FB and other big tech for throttling webs traffic.
My hope is that they fail.
Sorry, but the first article out the gate lost me with the immediate False Dichotomy: I can and do care about holding people accountable. To me, that includes BOTH following legitimate whistleblower protections for reports of genuine legal misconduct AND holding leakers and reporters accountable for violating laws, regulations, and employment contracts for sensationalism, slander, and partisan activism.
President Trump, Chief Executive of the federal government and properly elected Constitutional Head of the Executive Branch, faced unprecedented "resistance" (more properly called by the legal terms: subversion, slander, and libel) from within the executive agencies, including massive collusion with partisan press to undermine him with false claims. His response was warranted. I'm tired of the press trying to claim overly expansive definitions of "whistleblower" to protect "anonymous sources" that actively violate the legal standard for whistleblowers, violate the press's own published standards for the use of anonymous sources, and do so not for any public good, but purely for political advantage.
