Caitlin Clark’s Choice:
If you’ve followed New Outlook over the past couple of months, you’ll be well aware of our lengthy coverage (available in the Notes section) of the basketball phenom Caitlin Clark, the record-shattering year she’s had in her WNBA rookie season, and the amount of animosity she’s faced inside the league, from current and former WNBA players, and outside the league, from the WNBA media.
Why all the vitriol? She’s a gifted basketball player from Iowa who, for the first time in a really long time, has made the WNBA relevant as a result of her devoted fanbase who have followed her from her college basketball days to the WNBA. Clark also happens to be white in a league primarily dominated by black, LGBTQ women. While that may seem like a trivial point, Clark’s coverage on and off the court by WNBA players and the media alike proves otherwise. Her presence, and the much needed impact she instantly had on the financially struggling league, was not welcomed partially because she did not bend the knee to the social justice decrees of the league and its proponents, a seeming prerequisite for new players who wish to be in good standing with a league that prides itself on representing social justice movements.
Now, during Clark’s off-season, when WNBA players typically travel overseas to play in a European basketball league, she has the option to play or opt out of Unrivaled, the first State-side 3 vs. 3 competitive league which debuts in January 2025, featuring top WNBA players, and designed to support WNBA players who wish to supplement their annual salary in the offseason.
